An article was published by Newsweek on the issue of exercise bulimia or purging through exercise. Here is an excerpt from the article: "During her years at Smith College, Caitlin Scafati battled what's known as exercise bulimia—a type of eating disorder that drives patients to cut their weight by working out at least two hours a day. In addition to extreme weight loss, the syndrome can lead to stress fractures or early osteoporosis." The article is called On Campus: Addicted to Excercise. Please note that the page you will link to provides helpful information on this eating disorder, but is not owned by Selah House and may contain advertisements or material that doesn't represent Selah's philosophy. We at Selah House have seen an increase in purging through exersie. Our society often shows acceptance and even glorification of it. How much exercise is too much? It is recommended that those who question whether they may have an eating disorder get a professional assessment done with an experienced therapist to see if eating disorder treatment may be needed. |
